Gilles Peterson Dimensions-Festival-2013

YouTube Sessions: Gilles Peterson

With a name that’s become a byword for (musical) quality and variety, Gilles Peterson is a man in a highly enviable position. Thousands of fans around the world trust his curatorial ear, whether its at his hugely popular annual Worldwide Festival in the South of France or on his many radio shows and countless mix CD’s, few figures in music command as much trust from their followers as the Brownswood label boss. Earning this trust through a distinguished career that stretches back to the 80’s and the legendary Talkin’ Loud & Saying Something night at Camden’s Dingwalls, Peterson’s peerless reputation as a taste-maker gives him carte blanché to pinball from Jazz to Juke or any other genre for that matter without his devotees batting as much as an eyelid.

Ahead of the now sold-out Worldwide Awards at Koko in Camden on Saturday and the huge after party at XOYO on Sunday (featuring The Internet, Jon Wayne, Christian Rich, Lefto and the man himself), we got Gilles to take us through a nice smattering of his favourite YouTube clips. There’s cosmic Jazz, visceral present day Hip-Hop and a blast from his past as Peterson serves up a selection every bit as varied as on of his DJ sets.

Sun Ra – Space is the place (1974)

You’ve got to have a bit of Sun Ra in your life…

Hermeto Pascoal – Música da Lagoa

My favourite video on Youtube!

Dingwalls Electric Ballroom

It’s all about the ‘scene’ and where it all started for me making the connection between Hip Hop and Jazz. With my old friend Paul Bradshaw the founder of Straight No Chaser Magazine.

Yusef Lateef – Brother John

In memory of the legend that was Yusef Lateef RIP.

Lonny Holley – From the Other Side of the Pulpit

I only just found this guy on Bandcamp a few months ago. I love the mix of Alabama Blues and Sun Ra. I hope I get to see him live one day.

Worldwide Festival Sète

My favourite place to be every summer – with possibly the nicest bunch of people.

Donald Byrd Montreux Jazz Festival (1973)

Montreux was the first jazz festival that I went to and I was later invited to Claude Nob’s home where he first showed me this video.

Nick Muvley Brownswood Basement Session

My favourite basement sessions at Brownswood.

Worldwide Awards Video 2013

To give you a little taster of last years Awards, and each year just gets better and better!

Hive Earl Sweatshirt

One of my favorite Hip-Hop tracks of 2013 and love the Trippy gritty video.
