Youtube Sessions: FunkinEven

Acid heavy 303 jams, low slung smooth house, frazzled neo-soul. Steven Julien (aka. Funkineven) has all these in his locker in spades. The Londoner has enjoyed acclaim at whatever he has turned his hand to over the last few years, with his production work on vocal cuts with Eglo’s leading lady Fatima sounding no less vital than the monstrous likes of ‘Dracula’. Now a regular collaborator with Detroit’s Kyle Hall (as the duo Funkinevil), the size of his mark on underground music continues to grow at pace.

Soon to feature in the Eglo room at this month’s Hydra event at Fire with the 3 Chairs, we caught up with Julien to see what Youtube vids he keeps bookmarked, with the results as eclectic as his discography. Unsuprisingly Kyle Hall makes an appearance, but so to do Black Sabbath, director Fritz Lang’s 1920’s masterpiece ‘Metropolis’ and an ‘Angry Kung Fu Marine’. Check it out…

Greg Beato – Let Em Know

First track of Greg Beato I discovered on Soundcloud. I sent him a message for a release on Apron Records and got it – star in the making.

FunkinEvil – Dusk

Been listening to this non-stop on most flights for 2 years. Perfect place in the skies for this one..

Frederick – Games

Absolute classic, reminds me of 80’s house parties at my mums flat. Love the 1st synth lead @ 0:15mins, wish it came in again..

Angry Kung Fu Marine

Cant get enough! I’ve been watching this video for jokes since it’s been published. I never get bored and it’s a big video between me and my friends.

Killa classic film. Love it. Right up my street for cinematography, contrast and the message in this film pretty much still happens today, ‘Conditioning of the minds’…

Ali Boulala

No need to explain this, Ali is a real nutta for this attempt..

KMFH – Untitled

Another song I recommend to listen to while flying. Need this on wax!

Who’s Bra

Most videos on this youtube channel are funny, but this I find alluring when she says the last line..

Black Sabbath – War Pigs

Powerful song!

Dale Jacobs – Almost Home

Rhodes, one of my favourite instruments and Jazz fusion is a genre I love and the last tune of this album sends you home to the sunset.. (What a softy I am)..
