We’re only 24 hours away from this year’s edition of Amsterdam Dance Event – the annual five day extravaganza of conferences, talks, demos, showcases and club nights that draws thousands of punters from around the world and across the spectrum of electronic music. Deciding what to do and see at ADE can be a pretty overwhelming task, and can often mean that you end up neglecting to explore Amsterdam itself – one of the most unique cities in the world. Thankfully to help you navigate your way through this canal filled dance music utopia, we’ve managed to secure the services of none other than San Proper. A larger than life character with flowing rock star hair and arms covered in tattoos, he’s also one of the city’s most respected DJ’s and performers – having played an integral role in the local scene for over 15 years. Famed for his wide ranging sets, his productions are equally eclectic, taking in influences from Acid to Afrobeat on to a Techno and House template.
Before he plays a host of official parties this week alongside the likes of Moodymann and Space Dimension Controller, we got San to give us the inside track on his favourite spots around his hometown. Make sure to pay these cafe’s, museums, clubs and restaurants a visit in and amongst the dance music madness set to unfold over the next five days…
This online radio-studio is located in the heart of the red-light district of Amsterdam. I often do my show here on an occasional Thursday-afternoon, usually between 13:00 and 15:00, I play various styles the first hour and often bring my proper House-tunes in the second. This station is represented with many of my favourite deejays from Amsterdam and behind the studio there’s even an expectional record-store named Redlight Records where I often purchase my vinyl gems.
A classic oldschool movie-theater with a consistenty high quality-program in cinema. It could also get romantic in the restaurant of this place if you’re having a date but still wanna go see a movie.
At an easy-going location with a great vibe, a nice bar with an “eet-cafe”-mentality. Cute staff. Nice for lunch and whiskey.
I’ve been a fan since this record-store opened in ’97, the label is definitely one of my favourites too. The music I collect here is very dear to me and I’ve always applauded the wide range of styles they offer and the releases of my ‘Proper’s A’dam Family Series” was my debut, just like the first album I did entitled ‘Animal’.
A new museum with an extraordinary exterior and interior design. Great for seeing movies as well as having drinks and food or actually visiting the museum it contains.
Quality photo-art all year round and they’ve got their occasional pop-up-shops here and there too. Inspirational photography.
This restaurant is situated next to my favorite discotheque in town and has great cuisine too. Lunch out there is a real tip. The place has good feel, it’s homey but professional. I’d advise you to book a table in advance if you wanna go for dinner. It also has to close it’s doors end of the year, just like Trouw, so don’t let it pass you by…
This is my favourite night-club of all time. It has great programming of House and Techno and the restaurant is exquisite too. I do my club-night “Proper’s Cult” in the basement which they call ‘de Verdieping’, and I’m lucky to have my studio situated out there too so I’m around at least 4 days a week. Unfortunately it will close in January so I’d advise everyone to visit and enjoy this venue before it’s over, which is devastating to me, but I guess all great things come to an end. The staff feels like family to me, I receive so much love here all the time.
San Proper will be playing all over town at ADE this week. Head here to see exactly where and when.
