Following South London Ordnance and Iron Galaxy in our Vs. interview series are two staples of the UK’s underground, Royal-T and Roska. Both artists are respected members of the Rinse crew; often appearing on the airwaves, regulars at the events, and, as of today, both have put albums out via Rinse Recordings.
We called upon Mark and Wayne to ask each other a few questions inorder to learn a bit more about their respective albums, being close to Craig David and how ‘nang’ the Rinse 18th Birthday is going to be…
Roska interviewing Royal-T:
Whats your favourite and least favourite track on ‘Rinse Presents: Royal-T’?
This changes everyday, but today I’ll say my favourite is ‘Gully Funk’ and my least favourite might be ‘Space Cowboy’, heard it too many damn times as it’s the oldest tune on there I think.
How would you compare it to your Butterz releases?
Different. I try and make everything completely distinctive in general though, I think most of my releases are a completely different sound to each other. Orangeade sounds nothing like anything on the album which is cool for me so everything stands prolific in it’s own right.
Being from Southampton do you feel closer to Craig David?
I guess so, don’t think he lives here any more though. Anyone who reps the Red and White gets a spud from me.
Whats life like having a Rinse FM show?
Amazing. It’s something I’ve always wanted to do and I’m very blessed to be doing so. Few sleepless nights here and there and a lot of train journeys, but I can be glad I’m doing my bit to keep the National Rail staff company from Southampton to Waterloo. Getting to interact with listeners is fun and I get to hear a lot of new music all the time which is heavy too. 1-3AM every Wednesday night, cheeky plug.
Where do you see yourself in the next 5 years?
Hopefully just elevating and doing everything I’m doing now but on a much bigger scale and with a lot more money to buy sweets.
Royal T interviewing Roska:
When you aren’t being Roska, Roska and Roska what do you do for fun?
I hang out with my family, get high with my brother and go to the gym to let off some steam.
If a tree falls in the forest and no one is around to hear it, how nang is the Rinse 18th Birthday gonna be?
I haven’t heard one Rinse event to be shit, so if you have missed out on any birthday event held by Rinse slap yourself and your friends for not making the effort to come down to one. If you have already been to some of the Rinse birthdays you will know September in London & Manchester are by far the biggest and best line ups to date.
How do you feel you’ve progressed from the first edition of your Rinse Presents to your second?
I have listened and heard a lot of constructive feedback, negative and positive on Rinse Presents: Roska 1 and made the nessescary adjustments I felt needed to be made to make this one a step up from the first one, whilst still keeping the vibe I have been known for.
What’s the weirdest thing you’ve ever seen happen around Brick Lane?
Haha, the things that are weird everywhere else are normal if you are local to Brick Lane. Apart from being offered a Gucci watch whilst sheltering from the rain and the seller recognising its me, to Roska everything seems ‘normal’.
What can we expect from you in the future?
You can expect more good tunes to be rolled out on Rinse some time in the next few months. A release via Tectonic in October (Spearhead/Blurry). Also some more collaborations to follow.
‘Rinse Presents: Royal-T’ is out now via Rinse Recordings.
