With Dekmantel popping off next weekend we’ve given you a last minute low-down of all the festival has to offer…
Date: 1st – 3rd August
Tickets: £83 for weekend; £33 for day ticket
Thomas Martojo and Casper Tielrooij founded Dekmantel as a record label & small promotions team about seven years ago. Today their dream has grown into one of Amsterdam’s most respected refined and high quality sources of forward-thinking electronic music. There’s no question that this team know about good music – their parties are labelled as the best the city has to offer and their roster of artists includes innovators such as Juju & Jordash, Joey Anderson & Mark Du Mosch.
Last year they embarked on their biggest endeavour yet – to organise a large scale electronic music festival. Dekmantel exploded onto the Summer festival circuit to rave reviews. It’s lush setting in the Amsterdam Bos – a forest on the outskirts of the small Dutch city – was a complete winner. The accessibility to the cultural hub and this year’s added option of camping makes a nice selling point to those looking to do it on the cheap, organising a trip on a last-minute whim. With capacity for just 5000 attendees, it’s a large but un-chaotic affair, unlike many of it’s bigger European counterparts.
This year’s programming is hands-down the most refined, streamlined list of names we’ve seen of all the competition this year. It seems wrong to pick “favourites” because everything is so inviting. Some sure highlights though, will be Move D & hometown heroes Juju & Jordash transmitting their acclaimed improvised live set as Magic Mountain High on Friday afternoon, Jeff Mills bashing the 909 like only he knows how, Martyn and Inga Copeland performing live together, Shackleton showcasing his mesmerising live show on Saturday afternoon and of course Detroit’s Three Chairs taking over the woodland area for the whole of six hours – whatupdoe!
Hyp Tip!: We’re pretty excited about the showcase from Vancouver based lo-fi House label Mood Hut on Friday afternoon. Pender Street Steppers & Hashman DJ will be throwing it down…
With each stage being curated by one of the biggest names in the industry (Red Bull Music Academy, Resident Advisor, Boiler Room & XLR8R) it stands testament to the event’s overall aesthetic and industry appeal. All the stages are outdoor/semi-outdoor except for the UFO arena which will get hot and heavy with Karenn & Shackleton both performing live, Joey Anderson doing his thing and Marcel Dettmann going b2b with Luke Slater.
The music concludes at 11pm each night & for those looking to continue to party Amsterdam’s Techno institution Trouw and rooftop venue Canvasopde7e will be hosting official afterparties each night. The latter have Mala locked down for Saturday night and with Trouw closing it’s doors in 2015, this may be your last chance to experience the magic while temperatures are at boiling point. See you under the trees…
