The Heatwave’s Greatest Carnival Moments

With over ten years of experience, The Heatwave are a British Bashment institution. Bringing the strongest Carribean vibes to the UK, they’ve become the first port of call for anyone looking to get their wine on. Unsurprisingly Carnival is their version of Christmas, so ahead of their many appearances around London this bank holiday – including their Hot Wuk warm up party at KOKO tomorow, we got them to run down five of their most memorable moments spent out in Notting Hill…

Playing on a float

We played on a Carnival truck a couple of times which is without doubt our all time Notting Hill highlight. Banging out Bashment and Soca anthems as the float turned into Ladbroke Grove for the final leg of the route was fully magical. An enormous sea of people going crazy to the music they love – what a buzz.

Wining on a stranger

As Farmer Nappy so perfectly articulates in his brilliant Soca hit, “Nothing ain’t wrong with a stranger wining on a stranger”. What other time of year can you buck up on someone in the streets of London and have a cheeky dance?!

‘Ghetto Story’ running Carnival

One year, can’t remember which, Cham’s tune ‘Ghetto Story’ was HUGE. Sometimes that happens. You get one definitive, unmistakable tune of the year. Other years it’s harder to call. But the timing worked out for Ghetto Story and it popped off Carnival weekend. That’s all you heard all day. Same thing happened with ‘I Am Blessed’. Had that stuck in our heads for weeks.

Making new friends

This photo of our mate Tobias raving like an original nutter sums up the carnival vibe for us. The funny thing is that when we put the photo on Facebook a few days after carnival, T messaged us saying “the crazy thing is I don’t even know who that other guy is”. Even though they look like they’re the best of friends. Legendary.

Raving to brand new Bashment at Lord Gelly’s

One of the first spots we always head to at carnival is Lord Gelly’s soundsystem on Cambridge Gardens between Ladbroke Grove and Portobello Road. Always a great vibe and the best place to hear the current Bashment hits alongside all the classics.

The Heatwave will be at Hot Wuk will be at Camden’s KOKO, tomorrow night. Buy tickets here.
