First Listen: Wen – ‘Arlington CT9’ (Soundman Chronicles)

Kent-based producer Owen Darby aka Wen, has been rising through the ranks of forward-thinking producers since his brilliant ‘Commotion’ EP surfaced on Keysound Recordings in early 2013. Having just released ‘Finesse’ on Tectonic in May (as well as contributing a blinding Hyp mix the same month), Darby shows no sign of letting up this year with a six track EP for Parris’s Soundman Chronicles due July 17. One of his most dynamic offerings to date, ‘Senary Cycles’ takes the hard hitting sentiment of last year’s shadowy debut album ‘Signals’ and channels it into unexpected yet exhilarating realms.

One of the most compelling numbers from the EP is understated opener ‘Arlington CT9’, which we have to stream exclusively below. Hardly a full-blown club number, this contemplative slow burner is a compelling introduction to the more fleshed out tracks to come. Mixing classic drifting Grime synths and roaring subs, it hints at percussive build ups, only glancing at the prospect of a beat. Wen instead shifts attention to his increasingly intricate sound design and fluent melodies. Get lost in the atmosphere below…

‘Senary Cycles’ is out 17 July on Soundman Chronicles. Pre-order it here.
