First Listen: Walter Ego – Baby Benz EP

Stream the exclusive premiere of Walter Ego’s return to Girls Music.

2012 saw young Sheffield producer Walter Ego stand up and get noticed, with releases on Senseless Records, Unknown to the Unknown and his own Bad Taste Records. Cue fellow Steel City prodigy Toddla T to snap him up, releasing the ‘Set Off’ EP on Girls Music last August. His sound is a colourful hybrid that sends house music deep into the tropics whilst drawing on the unmistakably British touchstones of grime and garage – a breadth of influences demonstrated in his recent Hyponik mix and February’s ‘Wavey’ EP on Coyote Records.

His second outing on Girls Music also typifies this fusion, with the 3-track ‘Baby Benz’ EP. Nicely coinciding with the warm weather, all three tracks have a distinctly exotic vibe. The title track is a stripped down ghetto affair, with weighty bass, razor sharp drums and cowbells a plenty, whilst ‘Augment’ moves into percussive freak-out territory, before the energy rises with the tribal clicks and whistles of ‘UK’. The EP drops this Monday April 22nd – stream the exclusive first play below.
