Jim Coles has been crafting his protean club sound as Om Unit since the turn of the decade, having released a swathe of critically acclaimed records for the likes of Civil Music and Terrorhythm, as well as setting up his own Cosmic Bridge imprint. With the ability to fluently blur the lines between Jungle, Footwork, Dubstep and Hip-Hop, Coles has become one of those rare producers that’s almost impossible to pigeonhole.
His debut album ‘Threads’ was a dynamic offering that hosted vocal contributions from the likes of MC Jabu, poet Charlie Dark, Gone The Hero and Jinadu. Coles followed up with last year’s ‘Inversion’ LP for legendary D&B establishment Metalheadz, which saw him confidently make a nod towards the sounds he absorbed as a teen, before his days of representing the UK in the DMC world DJ championships. Check out one of the stand-out tracks from that album, ‘Parallel’.
Up until now, Cosmic Bridge was an outlet for the sounds of other artists, but July 31 will see Coles land his first EP on the label – ‘Torchlight Vol. 1’. In the build up to the release next week, have a listen to formidable opener ‘Wagonist Riddim’. A harmonious blend of floor-rattling bass, agile drum programming and glacial synth melodies, this is the perfect soundtrack for a peak time basement dance.
‘Torchlight Vol. 1′ is out July 31 on Cosmic Bridge. Last few pre-orders available here.
