First Listen: Mculo – ‘Left Down Louis Botha’ (Roots By The Oder)

Get a taste for this vinyl-only release from nascent Berlin concept label Roots By The Oder.

With the deluge of releases in the electronic music calendar – particularly House and Techno – it often begs the question of how burgeoning record labels are able to make themselves heard above all the noise. Berlin-based UK producer Mculo and fine artist Alexander James have established an imprint that has firmly tackled this obstacle with a collaborative, multidisciplinary format.

The concept? James has painted two pieces on canvas (one of which you can see below) which is used for the artwork of the front of the vinyl sleeve and the B side of Mculo’s new Bunzlau Tape EP. The pair plan to compile enough pieces of work over the releases to then put on exhibitions in London and Berlin. Their first record is a strictly vinyl only affair, with 500 copies being pressed and distribution coming from the popular OYE Records in Berlin. Get ready for the release with EP opener ‘Left Down Louis Botha’, an understated House cut that harnesses dirty, galloping kicks and hard-hitting snares to great effect.
