First Listen: Echologist – ‘The Mechanics Of Joy’

Stream Brendon Moeller’s new EP for Prologue in full ahead of next Monday’s release.

One of the most prolific, and indeed talented, techno producers in operation; as Echologist, Beat Pharmacy, Mono Blanco, Shetland and under his birth name, South African-Born, New York-residing Moeller has combined the infuences of luminaries Basic Channel with those of acoustic dub music into low end experiments for the dancefloor. His work is scattered across many of the leading labels in this field – Electric Deluxe, Echochord, Deep Space, and his own Steadfast imprint – making up numerous albums and EPs of wide-ranging style.

‘The Mechanics Of Joy’ is hypnotic, bleep techno of the highest order. ‘Head On’ is rough and washed in analog hiss, a dark and mechanic opening to the release. The title track shares the A-side, a more lively affair that takes cues from acid as much as house and tees up the equally vintage tones of ‘More Instinct’. ‘Crossing Over’ finishes the release with the kind of slow-burning, grooved 4×4 that has characterized the majority of his work under this alias. Yet another quality record to add to his extensive discography.
