First Listen: Brownstudy – ‘In A Better Way’ (Third Ear)

We’ve got a first spin of the opening track off the new record from :Brownstudy, ahead of its release tomorrow on Third Ear.

:Brownstudy, born Jason Hogans, debuted impressively on Carl Craig’s Planet E imprint way back in ’98, with his earliest exposure to music coming through the celebrated electronic music scene in his hometown of Detroit. Perenially open minded, his subsequent career has seen him dabble in everything from Folk to Dub via detours into Jazz, Punk and Minimal to nae but a few. His latest LP, his second under the :Brownstudy alias, incorporates these myriad styles into one sprawling collection-with this genre hopping augmented by some insightful lyrics from Hogans delivered in a half spoken, half rapped style.

Before a ‘Life Well Lived’ drops in full tomorrow, we’ve got the lead cut here for your listening pleasure. Opening up with wet handclaps and a Nina Simone-esque soulful scatting, ‘In A Better Way’ takes flight with the arrival of Hogan’s frantic vocals. A seemingly stream of consciousness rant, Hogans rails against ‘greedy people with sycophantic minions’, before he moves on to empowering statements encouraging the listener to ‘continue to love yourself’ and ‘practice empathy’. An engrossing head nodder, its a nice taste of a record that offers a whole world of delights.

‘Life Well Lived’ is out Friday 28th March on Third Ear. Buy it here.
