A healthy dose of nostalgia, courtesy of Aphex Twin, Missy Elliot and more.
Renowned selector Monki built her musical tastes on a diet of garage and hip hop at home, later developing her knowledge of dubstep and D&B through obsessive listening of pirate radio stations, which inspired her early on to take up a career in radio. Rising from humble beginnings as an intern at Rinse FM, and moving on to a prominent night slot at Radio 1 at just 22 years old, Monki has since become one of the most exciting propositions in the UK club underground.
Her radio sets incorporate everything from house to garage to earth shattering bass, as well as her record label Zoo Records, which was set up exclusively to shine light on unreleased cuts she comes across in her day to day work. She’s also an in-demand live DJ, which has taken her to Ibiza, as well as a multitude of festivals including everything from Bestival and Glastonbury to Reading and Leeds.
You can catch Monki in action at BuggedOut! In Dreamland, alongside Novelist, Zed Bias, Wookie and many more on September 24. In the lead up to a day at the funfair, she’s has graced us with a selection of 8 classic music videos from her childhood. Plenty of gems from music television’s halcyon days.
1. Altern 8 – E-Vapor-8
Rave classic from Altern 8 and their most recognised video. They’re re-releasing their album Full On Mask Histeria remastered, and with some new remixes on so be sure to check that out.
2. The Chemical Brothers – Star Guitar
An absolute tune and classic video. I listened to a lot of Chemical Brothers growing up mainly down to my mum playing it in the kitchen, so had to include something from them in here and this fits the bill nicely.
3. Adamski & Seal – Killers
Throwback futuristic video from Adamsnki & Seal. Looks like some 90s video game interlude you’d find at the arcade.
4. Aphex Twin – Window Licker
This video fucking terrified me when I was kid, but still, if we’re going to talk about classic videos – the 8 year old me is going to have to get over it and stick it on the list.
5. Prodigy – Voodoo People
We’ll have to include a Prodigy video in here somewhere. ‘Firestarter’ is another video that scared me shittless as a kid so let’s go with the jungle thriller ‘Voodoo People’ instead.
6. Daft Punk – Around The World
There are loads of great Daft Punk videos but ‘Around The World’ is the first time the duo appeared in those futuristic motorbike helmets. Since which we’ve seen evolve into much cooler looking bits of kit.
7. Atlantic Ocean – Waterfall
Taken straight off the MTV Dance Anthems channel when the closest I’d get to Ibiza was Kevin and Perry Go Large.
8. Missy Elliot – The Rain
I have to include at least one Hip Hop video in here if we’re talking about videos from this era. One of the most stand out ones for me from the Queen, Missy Elliot.
Monki plays BuggedOut! In Dreamland on September 24 at Margate Dreamland, Kent, CT9 1XJ. Tickets available here.
