Bristolian newcomer producer Daniel Koehler made his debut to the Skudge White label series last year to much acclaim. His latest endeavour sees him moving further into leftfield territory being recruited for seventh release on avant-garde London imprint Berceuse Heroique, which continues to impress us as one of the most out-there DIY labels pumping out limited and high-quality material today.
Taking into account his output so far, it’s clear that he draws upon multitude of influences. Jungle breaks, heavy bass lines & Acid-Jazz are all tied together by a common melody. His ‘Dynasty’ EP, which was just released features three spaced-out cuts of experimental and ambient Techno. It rolls and pounds with an attitude that could catapult you in to a different dimension. Following suit with Berceuse Heroique’s rebellious aesthetic, the accompanying artwork features socio-political intonations juxtaposed with a quote from The Guardian & Irish playwright Samuel Beckett. As usual, this doesn’t necessarily reflect the music but rather spurs interest and provokes critical though on the current state of social affairs.
Hyp 186 is a fluid blend of 80’s Chicago House jams, rolling synth lines & sidewinding Jungle that translates perfectly. It features forthcoming Berceuse Heroique material from Beneath, two Acid cuts from a rare Joey Beltram collaboration, and culminates with a psychedelic outro from none other than the Grateful Dead…
Stream the mix below and allow Koehler to run you through the 7 Wonders he has hand picked from the selection. (We’ve also been informed that it’s Daniel’s birthday today so what better way to celebrate!)
Super mysterious track from Photek’s Modus Operandi album. I’ve been wanting to include this in a mix for some time. Razor sharp production from when the man was making shit that sounded like nothing else on earth.
2. Koehler – Technicolour
The A-side from my Debut release on Skudge White. Sidewinding technoid Jungle madness!
3. Koehler – Spiral Light
Cyberdyne Systems, Model 101 ! That’s all there is to say about that one!
4. R-Zone – Waters of Lethe
This is what happens when you make a track in a violently angry mood and then go take a cigarette break. When you turn the radio on just to distract your mind for a few minutes you find there’s an adaptation of The Divine Comedy by Dante. You can’t fuck with synchronicty.
5. Ekman – GMMDI (Breaker 1 2 Remix)
Quite simply the most epic track I have heard in a long ,long time. Pure evil. Only Berceuse Heroique would have the balls to release something quite so possessed! I think I may just have to upload one of those ten hour versions of this on YouTube so I can listen to it while battling for for my soul during an epic night of Zelda.
6. Virgo – Under You
Abstract, atmospheric, melodic, groovy and tough as fuck. A real cinematic moment for the dancefloor. Warning: if you drop this in a club at 5am don’t be surprised if you see the celluloid ghosts of Sharon Stone and Michael Douglas going at it on the dance floor.
7. Lost Entity – Annihilate (L.E.S.Mix)
Another total mind melter from the absolute master Joey Beltram. The way the sounds just flow is just stunning and those synth lines just seem to burst of the speakers . But talking about the technical details on this track is kind of missing the point. Just let the sonic drugs take you where you need to go !
