5 For The Month: January

Continuing our series of UK bass producers currently breaking through, this month we outline 5 names for the new year, from the classic electro-tinged sounds of Boddika, to the house/UKG flavours of Well Rounded’s Hackman.

One half of Instra:mental, Al Bleek aka Boddika comes with more militant electro after his debut (and quite brilliant) solo release on Naked Lunch last year. ‘Underground’ is forthcoming on Loefah’s Swamp81 imprint, sounding fresher than fresh.

Dark Sky
Hailing from South London, Dark Sky were responsible for arguably the late-night anthem of 2010 ‘Reflex’ as well as notable inclusion on Ninja Tune’s ‘XX’ compilation. With a hefty 12″ forthcoming on Blunted Robots and their stunning remix of Kelis’ ‘Brave’ out this month you can expect to hear a lot more from the three man production outfit in 2011.

Julio Bashmore
Bristol based house producer Julio Bashmore follows drops on Dirtybird and Soul Motive with ‘Everybody Needs A Theme Tune’, an anthemic house wobbler released this month on (sort of) new label PMR Records backed with remixes from Ramadanman and Midland.

Jamie xx
One third of Mercury Prize winning band The xx, Jamie xx has already proven himself as a solo talent. This month sees the release of his sterling bashment tempo edit of Adele’s ‘Rolling In The Deep’ as well as another track from ‘We’re New Here’, the forthcoming album that comprises Jamie’s remixes of tracks from Gil Scott-Heron’s ‘I’m New Here’.

First featured on Fabric’s ‘Elevator Music’ compilation in January last year, Hackman’s latest single ‘Made Up My Mind’ is out this month on Ramp sub-label PTN ahead of his debut album, solid house music on a heavier tip than last year’s excellent ‘More Than Ever’.
