Redlight
Redlight is a Bristol-based artist navigating the unnamed airspace between house, breakbeats, dubstep and other well-loved dance music sounds. Having already crafted a handful of jet-propelled bangers which have won over early fans and followers including Skream, Toddla T, Jack Beats, Goldie, Carl Cox, Pete Tong and Annie Mac Redlight now looks set to become a high-flyer.
Whilst Redlight will, for the time being at least, be an unknown name to the majority of listeners, the man behind the beats is by no means a novice. In his original incarnation as DJ Clipz, the producer and DJ has risen through the ranks to become one of the most celebrated and respected artists in drum n bass. Operating at the forefront of the scene, he’s played all over the globe, become part of the Full Cycle family, launched his own Audio Zoo label and been responsible for some of the genre’s most essential releases of recent years. Starting afresh with a blank slate – and free from any constraints, expectations or categorization – Clipz has now adopted the Redlight alter-ego in order to explore new musical territory.
This summer Redlight played on the BBC Introducing stage at Glastonbury – his storming DJ set captivated a packed and lively crowd at the festival and was simultaneously broadcast live to the nation via Annie Mac’s Radio 1 show. The BBC endorsement has continued and Redlight will now helm his own 1Xtra ‘In New DJ’s We Trust’ show starting this autumn. As well as holding down an increasingly busy DJ schedule, Redlight unleashed his debut, double A-sided single, Rock The House / Twist Up via his own Lobster Boy label in August. Rock The House swiftly became Carl Cox’s Track Of The Week on Kiss FM and the release has helped further embed the Redlight flag in the musical map.
Redlight has spent more recent weeks putting in some serious studio time working on solo productions; collaborations with Rusko and fellow Bristol boy Ben Westbeech; as well as remixes of Roots Manuva, Little Boots, Pendulum, Toddla T, Hockey, Athlete. Redlight’s debut single will soon be followed by a 5 track EP featuring vocals by Jenna G and Jammer. A full album adventure is planned for takeoff in 2010/11
