YouTube Surfing: Last Japan
This Thurday’s YouTube Surfing comes courtesy of Marco Giuliani, aka Last Japan. He shares with us tracks that have influenced his production, tracks that he regularly plays out, and some rap favourites.
Amongst Wiley, SpaceGhostPurrp, Outkast and Jadakiss is Kamikaze‘s ‘Ghetto Kyote VIP’, the three-way Sunklo collab, and Mickey Pearce‘s Redlight remix. Whilst many genres are covered, there seems to be a unifying characteristic of high-energy instrumentals throughout; something clearly also present in Last Japan‘s own productions and DJ sets.
Jadakiss – Knock Yourself Out (Instrumental)
“The Neptunes are such a big influence on me, and this track gets me moving every time. It never ceases to amaze me how musically, high-quality all of the neptunes productions are. Its such a driving force of mine to keep my production at a high level for each release. Anyone that is yet to get into The Neptunes should listen to Haido’s ‘Bling Like The Neptunes Sound’ mix – Neptunes production from start to finish.”
Outkast – Da Art Of Story Telling Part 4
“A friend of mine from Bucharest first showed me this track a few months ago, and since then it been a track I’ve played almost everyday – It really shows how good a rapper Andre 3000 is.”
Toasty – She
“Another huge inspiration for me, Toasty or Toasty Boy which ever you prefer. First heard Oneman play one of his tracks on Rinse. I then set about getting his whole back catalogue on vinyl! Such a shame hes not producing music anymore as far as im aware of anyway.”
Joy Orbison & Pearson Sound & Boddika – Faint
“Just bought this EP on vinyl. I think its going to be one of those tracks in the future that if you have the 12″ its going to be worth a lot of money. The sounds in this track make me want to go out and by analogue gear – and then the vocal sample tops it off really.”
Wiley – Athletes Foot (Lethal B Diss)
“Who doesn’t love Wiley? This little Lethal B Dis is great. I swear this is what YouTube was made for, searching for old Wiley, Dizzee, Skepta or grime in general. Morgue is a dark riddim as well.”
Kamikaze – Ghetto Kyote V.I.P.
“Whenever a club crowd catch a glimpse of the “uh uh” vocal in this tune, they go nuts, and even more so when the melody drops. Its a must play in my sets.”
Zomby – SheLovesMeNot
“This tune has been lurking in my YouTube favourites for a while, and every time I hear it I pray that he releases it at some point. Such good use of breaks samples – I had to do a YouTube reload on this twice while writing about it.”
Two Inch Punch – Moonstruck
“Off his new EP ‘Saturn: The Slow Jams EP’ this guy can do no wrong in my books. He’s even produced for man like Lil Wayne I believe! If you havent already go buy his new EP and the one before that, great producer.”
2.7.5. Purrp – 0.0.T.E.
“Im not a huge fan of SpaceGhostPurrp, I have listened to his album, but this track I love. – I think its the beat, plus he goes in on it. Like the video as well.”
Redlight – Lost in Your Love (Mickey Pearce Remix)
“When Mickey sent me this it was literally a case of gun finger salute at my desk. Im not so keen on the original but hes turned it into a dance floor riddim massively! Hes got a lot of great stuff coming out soon, as well as the last EP he released on Swamp and TTY.”
