It turns out 1996 was something of a vintage year when it comes to independent record labels. Seemingly, everyone and their mum’s favourite house music imprint is coming to the ripe old age of fifteen this year but that’s not going to stop us singing, dancing and shouting from our East London rooftop about the fact that we’ve weathered the very long -and sometimes stormy – ride and still have enough enthusiasm, energy and passion for this business and, above all, the music, to last at least another fifteen.
The Nest presents Russ Yallop + Maxxi Soundsystem
Friday 27th January
Certified Crosstown Rebel and man behind that warm, deeply charming house music with boundless energy, Russ Yallop, returns to The Nest for the final instalment of new Friday night showcases. Just as the Crosstown heat had positively infected almost every house music fan on the planet, Russ Yallop dropped ‘I Can’t Wait’ on the imprint and his career has spiralled out of control ever since. A number of quality EP releases have ensued and the ‘drunk on vocals’ house producer is looking to drop a debut album in the New Year.
Maxxi Soundsystem’s edit of 80s soul classic ‘Criticise’ got jacked, wheeled and reloaded by practically every nu-disco DJ in the country this year. Since then the Brighton based producer has held down DJ sets in the country’s most progressive clubs and festivals, released on the likes of Moda, Southern Fried and Needwant Records and been welcomed into Bristol’s leading house music family, Future Boogie. He will be joined by Oxford based duo Casino Times (whose MJ Cole and Missy Elliot bootlegs have enjoyed viral success) and fellow deep house, Southern Fried releaser Caze Nove.

DON’T BE AFRAID and HYPONIK have joined forces to raise money for housing and homelessness charity Shelter this Christmas through a new dedicated fundraising event called THE BIG WHEEL.
It is difficult to imagine celebrating the Christmas holiday in 2011 without acknowledging the hardship that difficult economic conditions have imposed. When times are good there is no better place than London to enjoy the high spirits and euphoria of the holidays, and for many that will not change this year. However, every two minutes someone in this country faces the nightmare of losing their home. An estimated 35,000 people across the country face the prospect of losing their homes between now and Christmas.
SHELTER support people who are homeless or in desperate housing need. Don’t Be Afraid and Hyponik have assembled a stellar line-up of DJs to help the fundraising effort. A range of London’s best selectors, plus 2 UTTERLY VITAL SPECIAL GUESTS will play short 45 minute sets across the two floors of the Horse & Groom. 100% of all donations will go to Shelter, all DJs and performers are appearing for free, and all publicity, marketing and production expenses are being paid for by sponsorship from the two hosts.
“The earth spins on its axis, One man struggle while another relaxes.” (Massive Attack – ‘The Hymn Of The Big Wheel’)
Tickets can be purchased in advance by visiting the Big Wheel Christmas Fundraiser Just Giving page, and making a minimum £5 donation:
DIN is proud to be able to host some of the Bristol’s most promising and exciting artists for their first party. Tectonic head-honcho Pinch leads the line-up in the main room off the back of some stellar releases on labels such as Swamp 81, Planet Mu and his own Tectonic Records. A pillar of the electronic music scene in Bristol he fuses deep bass vibrations of dub reggae with modern day dubstep.
Joker’s cohort Gemmy has released on labels like Planet Mu, Punch Drunk and his recently formed W.OW. (World Of Wonders) imprint. With his timeless synth-led productions he has made his mark on the dubstep scene with tracks like ‘Supligen’, ‘Back To The Future’ and ‘Rainbow Road’. Known as part of the ‘purple trinity’ alongside Joker and Guido his playful melodies and stern basslines allow his signature style to flourish.
Kahn is a relative newcomer to the scene, having already released on Punch Drunk he sits on the fence between dubstep and garage both sonically and rhythmically. Kowton (or Narcossist as some may know him) has been in a rich vein of form as of late with tracks like the acid influenced ‘Drunk On A Sunday’ showcasing his ability to make music than leans further towards house but with the rough edges that we’ve become accustomed to hearing from Kowton.
Room 2 will be hosted by label, blog and party, Get Some, with Simbad, Kashmir Kid, 2nd Drop Records, Crypt and Ouzo Beats.
All proceeds from the night will be going to Mind, England’s leading mental healthy charity.

Friday 9th December / 11pm – 4am / £6 entry
The brains behind the prolific Hypercolour imprint are back this week for a night of deep and bassy house. Joined by London based label boss, T Williams, our basement will be swelling with the sounds of subs, kicks and moody melodies all night long.
London’s T. Williams is a producer whose ability to soak up far-flung influences and cultivate them into modernized music of his own continues to set him apart from his peers. With nearly a decade of experience in electronic music, Tesfa is now at the foreground of a new sound that straddles the sentiments of deep house, UK funky and dubstep all at once whilst keeping a feel totally unique to itself. Off-centre and experimental in appearance, his music is steeped in the traditions of house music of the past but brought to life with an inherent contemporary finish that asserts itself into 2011.

►EDDY TEMPLE MORRIS- XFM’s Remix guru is kicking off the year with a typical Eddy DJ Diary, twisting and turning around Europe‘s coolest dance floors including the Big Snow Festival in Andorra, Eddy’s focus has been on his production/remix outfit/band, Losers. He was asked to support the Prodigy at their huge show in Milton Keynes this summer. The band didn’t want to do this gig without their favourite DJ so Eddy had to leave his stage at The Secret Garden Party to rock 60,000 people Milton Keynes before coming back to play with Doorly, Example, Hybrid, Jakwob, SkisM and The Freestylers.
►PUNX SOUNDCHECK – The partnership of John Taylor and Arif Salih brings together the music that shaped them and the music that’s shaping their future, traversing disco and house, reggae and dubstep, electro and (old) rave, all the while sounding effortless and elegantly modern.
►MIDI MIDIS- MidiMidis make original compositions using midi and 8 bit melodies from chips taken from late 70′s and 80′s video-game consoles.
Whilst constantly writing and recording new songs, the lads are also currently mixing their debut album with ex-Cooper Temple Clause Tom Bellamy.
►MEDLAM- Medlam started djing several years ago after starting university. Formerly a drum and bass DJ, he started to incorporate dubstep into his sets as well after it exploded onto the scene a few years ago. This added a lot of depth and divertisty to his sets, giving him plenty of crossover appeal within the confines of bass music.Since starting on the decks, Medlam has gone onto play at venues and nights such as Digital Newcastle, The Gramaphone, Trouble Vision at Corsica Studios, CODE at Rhythm Factory, Dubscover & Techscover at The Rhythm Factory, 93 Feet East, Inigo Bar & Raduno to name a few, as well as recent gifs in Costa Rica, at Grenade in Ibiza and at the acclaimed Gottwood Festival in Wales.
►DAFFADAM- Daffadam is one half of Soltek, a London club night which offers an antidote to the over-priced, generic parties that we’re all tiring of. Recently voted in the top 5 club nights in the UK by DJMag, Daffadam has hosted as well as supported some of the most renowned and respected artists in bass music today… Phaeleh, Commix, Nu:tone, Spectrasoul, Lynx, Cluekid, RacknRuin + many more.
Maintaining his ethos in showcasing some of the freshest, most forward-thinking music around, Daffadam has been involved in several production projects including remixes for Chase & Status, High Contrast and RacknRuin.
Expect to hear an innovative, energetic set with a strong emphasis on both quality and diversity that spreads across many flourishing genres ranging from Dubstep, Drum & Bass to House and Garage.
►THE WORDS- Manchester 4-piece The Words release ‘Truth & Faith’ on November 14th- mixing their BRMC and James influenced musical sensibilities with singer Steven Draper’s frank and original vocal wit, manner and style.
The LP is Room Thirteen’s ‘Album Of The Month’, and the band are being supported by the likes of BBC introducing Kerrang Radio & Tasty.
The album follows several acclaimed EP’s which gained airplay on 6Music from Tom Robinson, has featured in a Windows 7 promotional campaign, Playstation 3 game ‘Vibes’, as well as several independent films. Mercedes-Benz have picked the band up three times for their mixtape promotion, culminating in them playing a concert celebrating 125 years of the car giant in Stuttgart this August. The cover of the single is a picture taken at this show, in front of 40,000 people while supporting Placebo and 30 Seconds to Mars.
►THE WATERMELONS- The Watermelons are a four piece indie pop band consisting of Toby Bain, Sam Salkeld, David Kelly, Matt Wagstaff formed in the south of United Kingdom back in 2009. Two years on, The Watermelons are on their way to becoming a well-established band. 2011 has been an incredibly successful year for The Watermelons. It began with a tour of Germany, playing established venues across the capital Berlin, in support of their music video entry to German MTV. Their video “Dancing with the Wrong One” achieved over 30,000 views within a week and rated number 4 in the download charts amongst the likes of Rihanna, The Kills and Kanye West.
►ARROWS DOWN- Residing in North West London, Arrows Down has recently released his debut album ‘PYRAMID’ as a free download. Two follow up albums have been released in September 2011: one is a collection of acoustic songs entitled ‘Billet-Doux’ while the other is a concept album entitled ‘I dreamt It Ended…’ The band has worked with the likes of D-Code, Dice FrSH, Thermal Bear and Teflon Child. They also perfomed alongside G-FrSH on the Tinie Tempah Disc-Overy Tour and have been confirmed to return for the October/November Arena Tour.

X Press 2
After hosting a room at the epic Plex/Colony/Machine party in October, Ben Sims & Kirk Degiorgio’s “new techno” concept clubnight MACHINE returns to the scene of the crime, taking over the Funktion-1 rigs at Corsica Studios with very special guests Kevin Saunderson and Rolando. Hosting room two is X-Press 2 with an all night showcase of “The House of X-Press-2”
The word “legend” is used too often, but in this case it is entirely fitting. One of the true, first originators of techno, alongside childhood friends Juan Atkins and Derrick May, his influence has touched all quarters of techno & electronic music. Behind such monikers & projects as E-Dancer and Inner City, and The Elevator, Saunderson has continued to move techno music forward for over three decades.
Interview with Saunderson by FACT Magazine: http://www.factmag.com/2009/07/10/interview-kevin-saunderson/
XLR8R Podcast by Saunderson:
One of Detroit’s finest, he first came to prominence as part of the Underground Resistance roster with one of the most important techno releases of the 1990’s “Knights of the Jaguar” (also famous for it’s rip-off version by Sony). Now recording with some of the most revered current techno imprints – Ostgut Ton and Delsin, Rolando – and in demand as a DJ across the UK and Europe, appearing regularly at celebrated venues such as Berghain in Berlin, Showcase in Paris, and Trouw in Amsterdam.
Interview with Rolando by The Skinny Magazine
XLR8R Podcast by Rolando:
BEN SIMS & KIRK DEGIORGIO
Curators & residents of MACHINE, and bringing a wealth of experience & knowledge (as well as several decades of DJ & production experience between them) Ben & Kirk have established themselves as two of the most influential people in techno today. their concept clubnight that moves from venue to venue, showcasing new & upcoming techno (most records played are within 12 months old, or unreleased) has gone from strength to strength in less than 12 months. Already with three London nights under their belt, as well as appearances in Dublin, Amsterdam, Barcelona, and more – and with sights set on Berlin and beyond for 2012, MACHINE is proving to be one of the most important and groundbreaking techno clubnights in Europe.
Taking over room two all night and showcasing their new album & live show – The House of X-Press 2 – here is what the boys are about in their own words:
“X-Press 2 make music for the dance floor. Pure and simple. So many nights and days and 25 years of being in and DJing at amazing clubs and parties are what inspires us to keep doing what we do. It was the dance floor that told us to be DJs in the first place and the dance floor that inspired the early tracks that we made. We loved that whole going out and hearing all sorts of music in one night thing. DJs like Alfredo and Larry Levan were champions of this style of DJing and it was thanks to people like them that we were able to do what we’ve done over the years. The old guard are still an inspiration for our music, both as DJs and producers but we are constantly checking for new names who always come along and give things a slightly different slant on what’s gone before.
I think it’s a combination of the old and the new that truly underpins our music nowadays. we can listen to and old jazz album from the 60s next to a hot new track from someone like Feygin and feel totally blown away. This is what keeps us going into the studio and making the music that we do. All that we’ve ever wanted to do out of our music is to see people dance and get that empathy with the dance floor, knowing how a track makes us feel and seeing it have the same effect on 2000 people dancing as you play it.”

►QUILLA CONSTANCE- Quilla Constance aka Jennifer Allen is a fine artist, singer/songwriter, dancer and costume-maker working through the mediums of pop music and video.
Since graduating from Oxford University and then Goldsmiths College of Art Quilla has been performing concurrently in a fine art, theatrical and mainstream pop music context; touring a set of spectacular musical numbers that antagonise the consumption of her fantastically overt identity.
Since 2008 Quilla has worked in collaboration with electro-punk composer/producer- Rafflesian and more recently, Aidan Love – (Mute, Interscope, Geffen).
Quilla’s recent music shows include Hackney Wicked Festival 2011 (Main Stage), Blitz Club Reunion, as featured on BBC London news – hosted by Steve Strange and Rusty Egan and ‘YouBloom’ Music Awards, hosted by Sir Bob Geldof, Nigel Grainge and Rupert Hine.
► THE HEARTRATES- Throughout 2011, the Heartrates have been entertaining crowds with insistent, highly melodic songs filled with tales of teenage love and dirty discos.
Already identified as one of the most colourful, unpredictable and exciting live acts on the London scene, it is the strength of the Heartrates song writing which has won most plaudits. Rarely breaching three minutes, the band say a lot in a short time and lyrical content takes listeners on a journey from suburban schools and local dive bars to tales of love, disappointment and the mistakes of adulthood.’
Musical Influences range across M83, Talking Heads, ABC, Pulp, The Cure, Cyndi Lauper and The Human League and their first as-yet untitled EP with be available at the end of this year. If you haven’t seen the Heartrates yet, do…and wear comfortable shoes as you won’t want to sit down.
► THE CONNECTORS- Punk, Rock and Roll are sitting in a bar, drinking cheap rum. In walks a trash can full of voices, who gets to talking. Punk, Rock and Roll think they might like this guy, so they pour their drinks down his throat, shake him up, swing him around the room, knocking over everyone. This is what The Connectors do. Punk swag with rock & roll guitar strings weaved through a solid, skank-worthy drumbeat, blasted through your ears with a drone of non-beauty from the frontguy. The Connectors love you, and they want to eat your beautiful energy. They are two modest boys, and they’ve come to fill your ears with whatever they could get out of their heads. So come listen, because hot girls like their music, and they are underground, which I’m told is cool these days.
► JOHN GALEA- Born in Norfolk and now based between London and Malta John has worked with the top producers and writers from around the world , including L.A based Beluga Heights ( (Britney Spears, Jason DeRulo, Rihanna, Nicki Minaj) , Dele Ladimeji ( Jay Sean/Mel C/Natasha Beddingfield) Hugh Goldsmith (Blue , Natalie Imbruglia) .
Johns Galea started when he was 13 and after winning a UK National Songwriting Contest , John started writing for himself aswell as other artists. Working with his own songwriting company ‘The Works’ John has seen Maltese singer Thea Garrett record her first smash hit single Frontline which hit number one in Malta, aswell as seeing his track Trendsetter being covered by German singing sensation Joelina.
John is performing at major national festivals all over the UK with his band and his track Do IT MY WAY is out now to download.’

AGE OF CONSENT
LEIGH DE VRIES
►AGE OF CONSENT – Formerly known as Shitdisco, London based two-piece (Joe Reeves and Darren Cullen) are influenced by the likes of Heaven 17, John Carpenter and Berlin-Era Bowie. Their first single ‘The Beach’ was produced by Luke Smith (Foals, Depeche Mode) and was released on the 5th of September 2011.
►DPPLGNGRS – From the dark backrooms emerged two lone gunslingers…Deciding to join forces, the powerhouse duo DPPLGNGRS was formed. This unholy alliance of Craig Fury and Tobias Doppelganger have set forth to set fire to dancefloors, armed with colossal beats and butt-shaking bass.
►BLANK DISCO – Blank Disco is primarily the musical persona of London / Home Counties based electronica artist Dan Seville. Although Dan’s musical activities have their roots in experiments going back to the mid ‘90s, his Blank Disco project only started to take full shape in 2009, since when he has embarked on a concentrated process of developing and refining his sound aesthetic, combining elements of techno, ambient and field recordings to effect his skewed vision of the contemporary landscape.
►LEIGH DE VRIES – With her monotone vocal style and naturel baritone, Leigh has been dubbed ‘The Voice’. Don’t expect to like her straightaway, you have nothing to compare her with. The effort of coming to terms with things you do not understand makes them all the more valuable when you do grasp them.
►LIONS- Lions is the musical brainchild of electropop-dance duo, producer Ben Ziapour & singer/songwriter Amy Syed. Based entirely in the studio for the past twelve months, the pair have been writing and recording tracks for their debut ep ‘Lights, ’ set to be released independently in early 2012. The project was launched live in October ’11, headlining at Camden’s Proud Galleries and since then they have swiftly started to pick up speed on the underground live dance circuit across London. Expect uniquely slick production, exceptionally tight beats and a lot of epic vocals. You probably won’t have heard pop music quite like this before…

Queen Cooly presents a 5 hours set of acrobatic music. be ready.
Following a party with Francois K in the basement of an office block & a disco session with Derrick Carter in a photo studio, tonights ‘A Private Party with…’ sees house music legend Kerri Chandler, in a intimate space playing music all night long.
Back to the raw.
A basement, a red light and a feeling as we take over this unused East London space to put together a top spec sound system for an intimate party with one of the undoubted legends of house music. Kerri Chandler playing an 7 hour set from start to finish with a set inspired by his long and fruitful relationship with Madhouse Records. Expect some deep 80s & 90s house music and fresh from an all conquering summer as DC10 resident, don’t be surprised if there’s also some cutting edge techno thrown in.
Launched in 1992 Madhouse Records Inc was a joint venture between US DJ and producer Kerri Chandler and Mel Medalie’s Champion Records. As an outlet for Kerri’s music & tracks he came across whilst DJing, the first release on the label was a 6-track sampler entitled “A Basement, A Red Light & A Feelin’” which showcased some of the artists and releases to come, and sold in excess of 100,000 copies on vinyl alone. With the label’s tracks now remastered and available to download, Kerri will be showcasing some of his favourite tracks of the era in a Madhouse inspired set.
This is no super club and you can expect attention to detail with all aspects of the production with numbers limited. This is a chance to see an undoubted house music legend doing what he does best…. rocking a warehouse party till the sun comes up.

**** We have just put more tickets on sale for Boxing Day Creche. We decided that it would be better to sell them now than on the door on the night, we wouldn’t want any of you getting there and not getting in cause it had filled up and having a shite xmas! Grab em now once they’re gone thats it! E****
This Christmas I would like a party on Boxing day night. Im always so bored the day after Christmas when i’ve spent so much time stuck in with the family.
In the party i’d like some of best DJs in the world. Im not sure if this is asking too much, but I’d like Crosstown Rebels’ head honcho Damian Lazaras alongside Hot Natured’s Lee Foss. Is that possible? Also can you make it a crèche party and make sure the Creche residents are playing too! that would be awesome…
Can you make sure this party is in East London somewhere, in a warehouse, a venue that creche has never used before and I’d like a big dirty sound system with loads of bass and lasers and mad lights. And then can you fill it with the best smiley party people up for raving the night away….pretty please…
I hope you can get this for me Santa…
