Reggae Roast Meets Conscious Sounds
FRIDAY 11TH FEBRUARY | 9PM – 4AM
The City Arts & Music Project Basement | 70 – 74 City Rd, London, EC1Y 2BJ
Following the momentous Righteous EP launch which kicked off 2011 with a bang, Reggae Roast continue the monthly residency in The CAMP Basement with another distinguished guest in the mix. The last 4 months have seen a host of renowned artists passing through the doors of The City Arts & Music Project, with highlights including Aba-Shanti-i, Errol Bellot & Ghetto Priest to name a few. This month is no exception as we welcome UK Dub linchpins Conscious Sounds, playing an exclusive 2-hour set of their classic releases and up-front dubplates.
London Dub producer and purveyor of the finest riddims from his East London studio, Dougie Wardrop, formed Conscious Sounds not long after he first began producing his own tracks in 1989. Conscious Sounds first introduction to the world of dub came with roots singer Tina Stelin who voiced the hit single ‘Can’t Touch Jah.’ Label mainstays the Bush Chemists (comprising of Dougie and partner Paul Davey) have separated themselves from the pack by releasing numerous top-quality 12-inch singles, being featured on numerous mix albums, and by working with such singers as Lutan Fyah, Pablo Gad & Kenny Knots.
Conscious Sounds are an integral part of the London Reggae community, and have developed a distinctive record label production, that is collected fanatically across Europe and beyond. We are delighted to have arranged a 2-hour set from the main man himself; Dougie Conscious, featuring vocals from MC veteran Culture Freeman.
Also playing on the night will be founders of Reggae Roast Exel & Moodie, special guest Steve Bedlam (Noise Control Audio) and resident selector; Dub Hunter. This months session will be hosted by Mystic Messenger, who’s unique MC style and righteous lyrics make him one of the best voices in town. Expect to hear the freshest selection of classic Revival, Dub, Steppers & Dubstep as well as forthcoming dubplates from the Reggae Roast Records imprint.
This is set to be another lively dance, showcasing the best London has to offer in Reggae and Dub. Reggae Roast’s monthly residency continues to promote the strength of real roots music and provides for the demand for a conscious club night, with a welcoming, bass heavy atmosphere. As always this event is only £5 before 11pm and capacity is limited to 350 so arrive early for guaranteed entry.
Artists: CONSCIOUS SOUNDS, STEVE BEDLAM, EXEL & MOODIE, DUB HUNTER & MYSTIC MESSENGER

KODE9 – 90MIN SET (Hyperdub)
http://www.myspace.com/kode9
Author, university lecturer and as Kode9, one of the most skilled and genre-unclassifiable DJ/producers the UK has to offer; Steve Goodman has gradually developed a sound that’s his and his only. Early releases slotted neatly into the emergent dubstep sound, but his more recent productions have become harder to classify with complex drum patterns, silky synthesisers and smooth sub bass. Kode9 is the man responsible for unearthing genre-defining artist Burial, and his Hyperdub label houses a host of forward thinkers including Darkstar, Cooly G, King Midas Sound and Ikonika. His DJ sets are consistently inventive and use mutating fluid rhythms as the driving force. With a new LP (Black Sun) set to drop in April, don’t miss out on this rare chance to catch up with one of the UK’s finest in the intimate setting of the Rhythm Factory!

Deadboy (Numbers)
http://www.myspace.com/deadboysoundboy
Deadboy has emerged from the London underground to become one of the UK’s most highly rated producers. His tracks evoke a sense of futuristic melancholia and his sound has been described as ‘heartache for the dancefloor’. After the success of his sublime ‘U Cheated EP’, the prestigious Glasgow based label ‘Numbers’ snatched him up and released ‘If U Want Me’. The track blew up and was used by Martyn, Kode9, Ben UFO, Ikonika and Modeselektor as the opening cut of all their individual Resident Advisor mixes. He has a penchant for swinging garage beats and pitch-shifted vocal snippets, and with a string of high profile remixes, has become one of the UK’s most sought after producers. Catch him while he’s hot!

Scratcha DVA (Hyperdub/Rinse)
http://www.myspace.com/scratchadva
The man known as Scratcha, DVA, Leon Smart or any combination of the three has made a big imprint on the UK Funky scene. With a string of critically acclaimed releases this guy has most certainly cemented himself in the developing structure of UK bass music. Some of DVA’s more recent material has been described as ‘merging the darker side of funky with the housier side of dubstep’. He has collaborated with some of Funkey’s finest including Cooly G, Roska and D-Malice. He can be found presenting the ‘Grimey Breakfast’ show Monday to Friday, 8am to 11am, on London’s leading underground station Rinse FM.

Boy is this Lad set for big things this year. Jeremy Duffy is one of the founders of London based label Join The Dots and has been releasing music under the guise of Duffstep for just over 6 months. 2010 saw releases on Join The Dots, Saigon Recordings and Electric Minds as well a host of DJ gigs and live AV showings throughout the UK and beyond. His debut album ‘Getting to Sirius’ (set for release on 14th Feb 2011) is a heady potion laced with influences of dub, house and down tempo beats.

SEE YOU ON THE 11th.
BR!

To whet your appetite for forthcoming Lory D material on Numbers, we are bringing the enigmatic Italian Techno producer over for a one-off date at London’s Plastic People.
Joining him is one of our favourite new producers, Blawan. He’s got some immense new material due out on R&S soon and was also responsible for the one of the best Hessle Audio releases of 2010 .
We’re going to be clueing you into more of the Lory D story over the next few months. Basically this man is a hero, our Prince and Drexciya obsessions have been pretty well documented and Lory D is up there with those guys. His music is a mixture of skeletal funk, controlled violence and impeccable sound design that sounds like no one else out there.
Lory, Lory, Lory, Lory…
